What this calculator does
A movable-hook extension spring replaces the fixed end hook with an independent ring or swivel eye. The ring rotates and can be replaced, which removes bending moments at the end and simplifies assembly. The calculator checks hook geometry, initial tension, travel and the fit between the ring, pin and end coil.
Inputs and outputs
Inputs
- Wire diameter and mean coil diameter
- Body coils and free length
- Ring type: embedded S-ring or pin swivel
- Ring wire diameter
- Working travel
- Material
Results
- Spring rate and initial load
- Stress in the body and in the ring
- Available travel
- Ring-to-coil fit check
- 3D assembly preview
Typical applications
- Luggage and cases
- Exercise equipment
- Door and gate hardware
- Safety harnesses
- Removable and serviceable assemblies
Design notes
The S-ring must be captured by the closed end coil; a loose fit will wear through the ring. Specify a ring wire diameter at least equal to the body wire diameter for parts that are handled repeatedly, and define the swivel orientation on the drawing.
