What this calculator does
A wave spring replaces a coil spring with a wave-shaped ring, saving height in axial space. Stiffness depends on the number of waves, wave height, wire section and number of turns. The calculator reports load at a given deflection and checks that the spring can be compressed to solid height without exceeding the allowable stress.
Inputs and outputs
Inputs
- Outside and inside diameter
- Wire diameter or strip thickness and width
- Number of waves
- Wave height
- Number of turns
- Working deflection
Results
- Load at the working deflection
- Stiffness curve
- Stress
- Solid height
- Required spring cavity
Typical applications
- Bearing preload
- Clutches
- Seals
- Connectors
- Downhole tools and compact actuators
Design notes
Wave springs are sensitive to the parallelism of the mating surfaces. Specify flat, parallel faces and avoid bearing the spring directly against a rough cast surface, which will flatten the waves unevenly.
